Generally there are 10 basic steps in the Australian citizenship process from the point view of official Australian immigration website. Step 1: Find out if you are eligible to apply:

To apply for the citizenship, generally you must:

  • Have permanent residency
  • Meet residency requirements
  • Have good character
  • Have 18 years of age or over; or below 60 years of age

There are 2 types of eligibility criteria; which are:

A) According to 1300t Australian citizenship, the person who is applying for citizenship should have 18 years or over; or under 60 years of age.

B) According to 1290 Australian citizenship; below persons also can apply for the citizenship:

  • Below 18 years of age persons and over 60 years of age persons
  • Applicants who are suffering from hearing, speech or sight
  • Applicants who are suffering from physical or mental incapacity that leads to understanding of the application.

Step 2: Meet the Australian residency obligation:

  • You should need to stay in Australian on valid visa for four years.
  • In 4 years, the applicant should not absent for one year period.

Note: The residence requirements are differ based on certain conditions.

Step 3: Prepare for test or interview:

You should read and understand the contents of official book “Australian Citizenship - Our Common Bond” for citizenship test or interview.

Step 4: Be ready with your original documents

You should collect and be ready with all the original documents; few of them are below:

  • Proofs of identity
  • You had not been involved any criminal convictions

Step 5: Fill up your application form:

Make sure that you completely filled up the application form.

Step 6: Submit your application form:

There are two ways to submit your citizenship application; which are online submission and post. If you prefer to post your application, find out the nearest department office and send your application along with necessary documents mentioned in the application form. Applicants, who are applying through online need to attach required documents, please remember that do not attach your original documents to the application in online or post. The applicant seeking exemption or fee concession they must submit application through post only.

Step 7: Be present at citizenship appointment:

The immigration department invites you for the citizenship appointment. In the letter sent by department will provide you all the details about appointment. The officer will verify your documents and identity and also check your original documents and information provided in the application form. You can choose taking the citizenship test or interview.

Step 8: Take Australian citizenship test or interview

If you are 18 years of age or below 60 years of age, you have to take the citizenship test. If you are not preferred to take test, you can attend for the citizenship interview. Step 9: Notification

You will get the notification from department of Immigration after submitting application form along with required documents and fee.

Step 10: Citizenship ceremony:

The final step in your citizenship process is attending citizenship ceremony; you will become an Australian citizen in this event. It will take six months time to hold the ceremony after your application had approved.
